Background.
Compulsory admission procedures of patients with mental disorders vary between countries in Europe. The Ethics Committee of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) launched a survey on involuntary admission procedures of patients with mental disorders in 40 countries to gather information from all National Psychiatric Associations that are members of the EPA to develop recommendations for improving involuntary admission processes and promote voluntary care.
Methods.The survey focused on legislation of involuntary admissions and key actors involved in the admission procedure as well as most common reasons for involuntary admissions.
Results.We analyzed the survey categorical data in themes, which highlight that both medical and legal actors are involved in involuntary admission procedures.
Conclusions.We conclude that legal reasons for compulsory admission should be reworded in order to remove stigmatization of the patient, that raising awareness about involuntary admission procedures and patient rights with both patients and family advocacy groups is paramount, that communication about procedures should be widely available in lay-language for the general population, and that training sessions and guidance should be available for legal and medical practitioners. Finally, people working in the field need to be constantly aware about the ethical challenges surrounding compulsory admissions.

Several herbicides were evaluated as seed-applied treatments to determine the feasibility of controlling cheat by applying herbicide directly onto the cheat seeds during the wheat harvesting process and returning the treated seeds to the field. Seed-applied trifluralin reduced cheat emergence 80% in exploratory evaluations. In herbicide-seed mixing time and spray volume experiments, short mixing times were adequate, and spray volumes from 113 to 227 ml/kg seeds did not affect results. Herbicides applied with a sprayer-equipped auger reduced cheat emergence >90% and were as effective as herbicides applied with a rotary drum seed-treater. Increasing spray volume increased the efficacy of auger-applied treatments. Adjuvants did not improve the efficacy of seed-applied trifluralin.

Infection surveillance definitions for long-term care facilities (ie, the McGeer Criteria) have not been updated since 1991. An expert consensus panel modified these definitions on the basis of a structured review of the literature. Significant changes were made to the criteria defining urinary tract and respiratory tract infections. New definitions were added for norovirus gastroenteritis and Clostridum difficile infections.

We present experimental results supporting physics-based ejecta model development, where our main assumption is that ejecta form as a special limiting case of a Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability at a metal–vacuum interface. From this assumption, we test established theory of unstable spike and bubble growth rates, rates that link to the wavelength and amplitudes of surface perturbations. We evaluate the rate theory through novel application of modern laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) techniques, where we coincidentally measure bubble and spike velocities from explosively shocked solid and liquid metals with a single LDV probe. We also explore the relationship of ejecta formation from a solid material to the plastic flow stress it experiences at high-strain rates () and high strains (700 %) as the fundamental link to the onset of ejecta formation. Our experimental observations allow us to approximate the strength of Cu at high strains and strain rates, revealing a unique diagnostic method for use at these extreme conditions.

Mathematical models of influenza pandemics are sensitive to changes in contact rates between individuals. We conducted population-based telephone surveys in four North Carolina counties to determine the number of social interactions between individuals during the 2007–2008 influenza season. Influenza activity was monitored through sentinel medical practices. Among 3845 adults, the number of social contacts varied with age, was lower on weekends than on weekdays, and further decreased during school holiday periods. Adults with influenza-like illnesses had fewer social contacts. Adults' contacts in the community setting increased during periods of peak influenza activity. Among 290 children, potential contacts (i.e. other people in the same location) were lowest among preschool-age children and decreased on weekends and during school holidays. In adjusted analyses, children's potential social contacts did not change during periods of peak influenza activity. These results should be useful for modelling influenza epidemics and pandemics and in planning mitigation and response strategies.

A simple method is described of testing the susceptibility to acaricides of larvae of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Can.) in Queensland, Australia, by enclosing them in packets made from rectangular filter papers, folded once and secured along the remaining three sides by spring clips, that had been impregnated with Risella-oil solutions of DDT, dieldrin, or Bayer 21/199 (coumaphos), or with deposits from xylene solutions of Dilan. The response of susceptible engorged adult females to dieldrin was tested similarly. Five out of six experiments showed statistical evidence of repeatability of results in determination of relative DDT-resistance of larvae. There was a slight increase in susceptibility of non-resistant larvae to DDT with increasing age between 7 and 28 days for fresh packets but not for re-used packets. In three out of four tests, re-used packets were significantly more toxic (up to 1·40 times) to susceptible larvae than fresh packets. In one test a loss of toxicity occurred after storage of Bayer 21/199 packets for 23 days. The possible use of this method for measuring resistance in ticks is discussed.

Recognition in 1963 in central Queensland of the Ridgelands strain of Boophilus microplus (Can.), resistant in varying degrees in laboratory tests to all acaricides commercially available in Queensland, Australia, led to spraying trials on cattle with these acaricides to assess their effect on the resistant strain. Dosage mortality tests on larvae exposed in acaricide-impregnated filter papers, indicated the following levels of resistance, carbary 13×, carbophenothion 17×, coumaphos 1.6×, diazinon 19×, dioxathion 7.2× and ethion 2.7×.
Stalled cattle infested with either susceptible Yeerongpilly or resistant Ridgelands ticks were sprayed with the recommended concentration of commercially formulated acaricide. Efficiency of treatment was determined by comparing the number of ticks falling from sprayed and unsprayed cattle. Coumaphos (0.025%) and ethion (0.075%) produced efficient control of the resistant strain, but carbophenothion (0.086%), diazinon (0.05%) and dioxathion (0.075%) allowed considerable numbers of the resistant strain of ticks to survive. Carbaryl (0.3%) as a melt-type formulation gave inconsistent results and possible reasons are discussed. Poor control of the resistant strain was largely due to failure to kill the nymph stage.
There was general correspondence between the resisdence level determined in laboratory tests and the degree of control achieved in spraying trials. However, the reletively small difference between resistence levels of 2–3× (coumaphos and ethion) and 7× (dioxathion) was critical in the practical control of resistant ticks on cattle.
The following chemicals gave excellent control of the Ridgelands strain in spraying trials on stalled cattle: bromophos (0.15%), bromophos ethyl (0.1%), chlorfenvinphos (0.06%), chlorxylam (0.5%), Ciodrin (0.1%) Dursban (0.025%), fenchlorphos (0.2%), GS13002 (0.05%), Imidan (0.075%), methidathion (0.05%) and SD8448 (0.025%). Malathion (0.5%), prothidathion (0.075%), macarbam (0.075%) and RD12308 (0.2%) controlled the Yeerongpilly but not the Ridgelands strain. Arsenic (0.2%) produced about equal mortality in both strains, but was clearly a less efficient acaricide than organophosphorus chemicals.

Objectives: This study reviewed the evidence for the effectiveness of different isolation policies and screening practices in reducing the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization and infection in hospital inpatients in an effort to develop transmission models to study the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of isolation policies in controlling MRSA.

Diamond is suitable for use as an ionizing particle detector for high rate, high radiation, and/or chemically harsh environments. A sampling calorimeter, a detector measuring the total energy of an incident particle, consisting of 20 alternating layers of diamond and tungsten has been constructed and tested. The diamond for the detector layers was grown by chemical vapor deposition with an averaged thickness of 500 μm. The active area of each layer was 3×3 cm2 with ohmic contacts on opposite faces forming a metal-insulator-metal structure. The calorimeter was tested with electrons of energies up to 5.0 GeV. The response of the diamond/tungsten calorimeter was found to be linear as a function of incident energy. A direct comparison of diamond/tungsten and silicon/tungsten calorimeters was made.

Two complementary techniques are used to study the electrical transport properties related to the use of diamonds as materials for ionizing radiation detectors. Transient photoconductivity using soft x-rays is used to probe the first few microns of the material, while ionizing particle-excited conductivity is used to probe the entire bulk of the material (1 millimeter). Both techniques measure the mean drift distance of free carriers, or the collection distance d. In addition, transient photoconductivity is able to extract the lifetimes and mobilities of the excited carriers. The collection distance measured by the two methods are in agreement, suggesting the material is homogeneous. At an applied field of 10 kV/cm, d is 25 to 30 microns, and, up to a field of 25 kV/cm, d has not saturated. The lifetime varies between 100 and 600 ps, and the mobility varies between 1000 and 4000 cm2/V-s, the range due to natural variations from sample to sample. The primary defects limiting the lifetime are believed to be nitrogen impurities and dislocations.
